Sustainability of Rights

Know how to estimate the sustainability of a right if granted. This includes knowing how to establish what systems and actions need to be in place for the right to be sustained.

Knowledge Node Summary

A right once granted may not be effective because it is not sustained or sustainable. The first element of sustainability is that the right must be known by the individuals and groups to which it applies. It may be necessary to provide resources from the central society in order to maintain the right, as in the case for the right to basic medical care. A sustainable right is likely to be one that is in regular use or called upon frequently so that it is not forgotten by the society. Either this or it will be so fundamental to life in the society that it is always accepted.
